The University of Helsinki is one of the leading European Universities. It is the largest university in Finland with eleven faculties and nearly 40000 students. The history of the University of Helsinki dates back to the 17th century.
Physics has been a discipline at the University of Helsinki ever since the university was founded in 1640. Today the research of the Department of Physics is highly ranked. For example, the research of atmospheric sciences done as a part of the Centre of Excellence of the Academy of Finland is right at the cutting edge of the research field worldwide.
The teaching at the Department is based on topical research and the courses are lectured by the best experts at their fields. There is a continuous effort to develop teaching utilizing the newest in physics education research. The Department has done exceptionally well in the evaluations of teaching.
Most of the secondary subjects relevant to a physicist can be freely studied at the other departments of the faculty, all of them conveniently located at the same Kumpula campus. The students also have a great opportunity to make use of the whole university’s diverse teaching programs. For example, the contacts to medical and biosciences are good.
The Department of Physics offers the widest selection of courses in physics in Finland. About 10 per cent of the courses are given in English.
