About the research

The research in the Department of Physics is done in physics, meteorology and geophysics. According to an international evaluation the physical research pursued in our university belongs to the elite in Europe. There are 28 professorships associated with the different fields of research in the department.

Besides the postgraduate researchers, graduate students, representatives of the industry, society and other groups are also taking part in the research.

The research can divided into three main groups:

(i) Research in materials physics deals with the structure and dynamics of matter, and the properties and changes thereof. Research is also done in medical physics.

(ii) The research in elementary particle physics is done in particle theories , cosmology and experimental particle physics.

(iii) Research in atmospheric physics and geophysics is done in aerosol dynamics, meteorology, geophysics, and space physics.

The researchers of the department take an acitve part in the research work done in the big international research centres and research organisations, as CERN, ESRF, ITER, and ESA.

The research is concentrated on currently important scientific problems, and is powerful both in the theoretical, experimental and computational field. The results from the research are published in the best international scientific journals. The researchers have extensive international connections to high-level universities and reseatch centres, and are invited to give lectures and seminars in foreign universities and research centres. The department is often visited by foreign researchers, and the results from the research have a visible and durable effect on the scientific society.
