The Finnish
Academy of
Science and Letters is celebrating
its 100-year anniversary jointly with the Finnish Physical
Society’s 60-year anniversary by organizing a one-day symposium
on energy on Friday,
August 31st
2007 10.00-18.00 at the Main Festivity Hall
of the University
of Helsinki.
The main theme for the symposium is the energy research perspectives
but the
program includes
also talks on energy-related geopolitical and security issues
as well as on global climate change. The symposium is aimed to deliver
independent
research-based information on energy-related issues and to motivate the
scientists to be more
active in participating
the public energy discussions based on the very recent research.
The invited
speakers are
internationally leading figures. The discussed topics include the role
of Academia in
energy discussions,
geopolitical aspects in energy production, fossil energy
and environment, clean energy production, energy in Europe,
renewable energy sources e.g. bioenergy and photovoltaics, energy
transport and
storage and global climate change.
The invited
speakers
include:
Kari Raivio (Chancellor of the University of
Helsinki)
Mauri Pekkarinen (Minister of Trade and Industry)
Jorma Ollila (Chairman of Royal Dutch Shell plc)
Jean-Paul Decaestecker (Head of Division for Energy and
Atomic Questions, Council of the European Union)
Jan Vaagen (Chairman of the Working group on
Energy, Academia Europaea
Friedrich Wagner (President of the European Physical
Society)
David Infield
(Director, Centre for Renewable Energy Systems Technology)
Dan Asplund (Vice-President of the European
Biomass Association, AEBIOM)
Paul Howarth (Director of Research, Dalton Nuclear
Institute, Manchester)
Hans Larsen (Head of Department, Systems Analysis
Department, Risø National Laboratory and Technical
University of Denmark)
